. . . the final chapter

Monday 9/25/06 It is hard to imagine feeling much worse than I do now – the constant foul taste that makes me sick to my stomach, the back pain as the neuropathy eats away at nerves and muscle tissue, the inability to eat solid food, the resignation that my illness brings on. In short, I am miserable, consumed with, overwhelmed by it all.
I have chosen to keep what amounts to a diary that you will not see until the end. I am no longer able to function in the world you live in – I am no longer able to pretend that I have anything in common with everyday people. I am dying – I know it, am not at all happy about it, and have retreated into my own world – a world that has no escape.
I always thought that I would live until I died – I did not realize that it could take so long, be so hard. In some respects, it’s amazing how a body that clearly is failing clings on to life – fighting a losing battle, refusing to give in to the inevitable.
It’s one thing to sit in a doctor’s office, and be told that you are going to die – and having no real sense of what that means – and quite another experiencing the actual agonizing process. You ask what to expect, what it will feel like – you are told, but the words ring hollow until the sensation begins to kick in. The day comes where you hope that you simply fail to wake up – when life is no longer desirable – where the morning is a bitter disappointment as yet another day dawns.
Wednesday 9/27/06 As I have mentioned previously, my universe grows smaller by the day – in part because I allow it, in part beyond my control. Yesterday I had coffee with one of the few genuinely decent people I ever worked with – Sharon Taylor. It was good to see her – it had been almost two tears since we last got together – and yet it was sad. Sad because I have declined so much.
I’ve kept myself out of view for so long – I could not help but notice Sharon’s concern and shock at seeing me struggle with the simplest of tasks. It actually caused me to realize how feeble I’ve become. The Muffin does virtually everything for me – even down to fixing my coffee. Yesterday I had to struggle with shaking hands to put sugar and creamer in a cup – a simple task, but one I’ve not done for a year or more.
But it was good to see my old friend – it was good to do something different other than sit by myself in what has become my prison…
Monday 10/02/06 My 61st year began with anything other than good news. My legs – my knees in particular – are increasingly unable to hold me upright. Last night I fell, today I ache and am fearful of walking. How close am I to being bedridden? How much lower can I sink?
The only thing I wanted for my birthday was to go to our favorite restaurant with my best girl – but when it came time to go, I was afraid – afraid of doing something as common as going out for lunch. I hate what has become of me.
Tuesday 10/03/06 So yesterday I discovered that my good, close, personal friends at WFLA are hard at work preparing my obituary. It’s reported that my “many friends” at the station are worried about me. Of course, in the past seven years I’ve only seen one of my “many friends”, and spoken briefly with another on the phone.
Overall, I’m amused that the bastards who threw me out in the gutter, now want to “honor” me with a fancy obit. I’m sure that it will be a warm and fuzzy thing, praising me to the hilt – why must the world be so phony?
These were the last words Bob wrote . . .
As his body failed him, I doubt he could find the strength to continue his entries. On Wednesday, October 11 he became too weak to get out of bed and remained in a sleep-like condition until he was gone at 9:15 am on Friday, October 13. He was not in pain . . . his life just stopped. His long struggle is finally at an end . . . much quicker than he or I anticipated.
The sorrow and sadness that fill me now are overwhelming. I have lost the love of my life and my best friend.
My thanks to those of you who have followed and shared his struggle over the past months, lending support and encouragement.
Bob lived his life in the manner he chose, he died in the manner he chose, and I am respecting his wishes that there be no visitation or memorial service. Should you like to make a memorial contribution in his name (and Bob was not expecting anyone to), it was his wish that these be made to:

Many thanks for the memories that Bob gave to all of us. I did not always agree with his views and his opinions, but I truely respected this man. The way that he could tell a story almost made a person feel as if they were there watching it unroll in front of them. Knowing what it is like to see a person pass from an illness, I am treuly awed by the way he managed to keep writing almost to the very end. The Mad Dog will be missed.

I only met Bob once or twice. My loss! I used to work with “Muffin” in Davenport, IA. Thought’s and prayers to you my friend in your time of overwhelming sorrow and sadness. Know that you are thought of often, warm and wonderful thoughts.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 9:23 am
I only had the good fortune to hear Bob’s show a handful of times, and a few more times when he would talk to Neil Rogers.
Even in that short period of time it was clear that Bob had a signature personality.
Godspeed, Mr. Lassiter.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 9:44 am
I used to listen to talk radio a lot. I don’t listen much anymore. I was fortunate to hear him on 570, 970, 620, and again on 970. I think that my favorite time was on 620. He was able to get away from the constraints of a topical show and have a little fun. My favorite show was probably the one he did with uncle Neil in Tampa when Rogers was here for a promotion.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 9:46 am
Bob Lassiter was one of the best at what he did. I never missed a show if I could help it and followed his blog daily. I am saddened by his passing. Sad for his wife, and all the fans of his show. Anyone who listened to Bob, if they were smart, knew him to be stubborn and a inciter of verbal sparring, which no-one could match. They couldn’t come a close 2nd. The radio world has lost one of it’s best, knowing now that he can never come across the airwaves. He was worth every dime they paid him and more.
God rest your soul, Mr. Lassiter. You wil be missed.

I learned allott from The Mad Dog in a short time at WSUN.
We caled him “Blob” thanks to Neil Rogers.
RIP Bob.

It is with a heavey heart the I say goodbye to Bob. Mary, may you find peace and joy in the time ahead. God Bless you.

Bob was a “god” when it came to talk radio. I remember when Dick Norman died and Bob did a double show. It was one of the best moments in talk radio I ever heard. At the time I was a runner and was listening to the show as I ran. The tears were running down my face as Bob talked. They are running again. Good night and God bless you Bob.

At one end I am sad at the loss of someone who, even though he would have denied the validity of it, many of us considered a close friend. Bob was something of a father figure to me in the years he was on the air after my own father’s death.
While i am sad, i am so very relieved that he’s finally able to move on–and peacefully as well. i guess he knows now exactly what happens in the afterlife–and I’m ure I’m not alone in the hope that he’s quite pleasantly surprised.
My thoughts are with you, Mary. wish there was something I could do to help, but of course there isn’t much.
You will be missed, Bob….
…And NEVER forgotten.
Be Good. Frog.

Mary, thank you for sharing the love of your life with us. I hope our appreciation of Bob will help in the days to come. Thank you, thank you. Peace.

So you finally did it! Signed off for good. Wow! What a great show it has been! I listened to you in FL before you went to WLS, and I remember your signoff from WFLA –I was sitting in my car listening, frozen still, feeling the loss, and you were very emotional saying good bye –I liked that about you; you were somtimes an SOB, and somtimes a pussy-cat… You weren’t afraid to show your whole self to the world; on the radio, in your blog… What a wonderful gift; someone so genuine, so generous, and yes, why must the world be so phony?
God’s Peace and Time’s Persistence.
A caller from St. Pete.

I feel like I’ve lost a friend. My Mom and I listened religiously. He was such a loss to radio in this area, none can compare although several have tried. I’m sorry I’ve missed his diary but will read it completely now. He was devoted to “Muffin”, that was clear. Take care, Mary. And Bob you are missed greatly. Penny
The 17th of October, 2006 at 11:52 am
I knew this day was coming and now I am so saddened by the end of one of radio’s great talk show hosts. Bob never pulled punches and radio doesn’t have anyone to meet his greatness. He told it like it was and used to piss off the conservatives and old farts. Mary, my prayers are with you and I know you will cherish those years with THE MIGHTY LASSITER.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 11:59 am
Mars. So sad when Kelly forwarded the announcement from Timmo. Bob is one of my most unforgetable charactors. I remember the restaurant in Chicago listening to Bob recount his encounter with Rush in DC. What a great story teller. Feel free to call if there is anything I can do.
Hugs, Meech

As I stated previously, The Magnificent Lassiter affected me in a very personal way at a crucial point in my life when I was learning to think like an adult. His talents were beyond anything I have yet to encounter again. Life is just to short…
Thanks Bob, for your contributions to the world!
I wish peace to Mary and anyone who personally feels this loss.

“IMAGINE”
As time slips effortlessly into the past we are left only with the memories.Of good times and sad times, times of plenty and times of need. Each of us has only so many days until the end of our time. Very few of us simply by being ourselves, our able to change the quality of time that those we touch have.We all learn differantly as we all percieve differently. Imagine a world without those people, the ones who can make the world so crystal clear, the ones who can ballance the scales and divide right from wrong the way that light divides the day from the night. Imagine your life having never been touched, never seeing the other side of the road, the side where pretty does not live. Imagine never growing wiser because no one took the time to show you, to teach you, not only with their words , but with their own falability.
Talk is such a simple thing. it enlightens, and entertains, and can also hurt. I was truly at the crossroads of my life when I first heard. Heard wit. Heard wisdom. Heard right and wrong divided, heard the scales being ballanced.
Imagine a guy who wasn’t suposed to succeed, suceeding. Imagine a guy wise beyond his education. Imagine that it only took believing that no matter how tough times are today its just one day out of many. and it could always be much worse. Imagine learning to laugh again after forgetting how.
Sept 21 1897, Virgina O’Hanlon of 115 West 95th Street Asked”Is there a Santa Claus?” The ansewer “Yes Virgina there is a Santa Claus. Alas!, How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus” How very dreary the world would be if there had never been Bob. Today I will find a stranger and make him think and then make him laugh.
Imagine Bob reading this and yelling ” GET OF MY BLOG YOU MISRABLE………………..
The 17th of October, 2006 at 1:22 pm
Mary, I have followed Bob blog daily and was sadden to hear of his death. Although I did not know him personally I never missed his talk radio show.
God Bless you in the coming days. May you find comfort in knowing how much he was loved by us the radio audience.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 1:28 pm
Dear Mary,
I first heard Bob my first day in Tampa when I moved from New Orleans in 87. What a wonderful welcome. I listened every day since when he was there, missing him when he was in Chicago. As a child growing up on talk radio, there will never be anyone like Bob. He made me laugh, cry, gave me so much wisdom, and a chance to imagine and dream during his wonderful stories. When I lost my own husband to cancer at 31, Bob was there helping keep me sane through it all and after, hearing his voice was the high point of the day.
I will always love Bob, remember his words, and be so thankful to him and you, for sharing his life with us. I am so sorry for your loss. He was so wonderful to so many. I can only imagine how amazing and special he was to you. You are both so lucky to have found each other and such love.
Thank you Mary, for posting his words, and connecting with us.
Bob, you will always be loved.

The best always go too young. The worst invariably linger on well past their time. Bob was, and remains, the best of the best. I have missed his voice for seven years. I will miss his life, even though I be but one of many hundreds of thousands of anonymous fans.
I’m glad to read that he did not suffer much at the end. It is the least he deserved to be able to do - to die in peace.
My heart goes out to you Mary Lassiter, though these be but mere words.
Farewell, Mr. Quaduffski

Just heard Ron & Fez (xm202) talking about Bob and what he meant to them - it was really touching. i had to come here myself and read some of his blog. Wow what a loss, the stories and the way they are worded are more like poetry and I am impressed.
Best wishes Mary - what a touching story.

One day I was surfing the web looking for Lassiter news, and I found this page. At first, I was ecstatic to see that the Mad Dog was still around.. then I started reading. The news of Bob’s bad health was like a punch in the gut, but at least, in some small way, I was connected again with one of my heroes. He’s left me again, this time he ain’t coming back.
*sigh*
Mary, I wish you all the best. You had a great hubby, he touched a lot of people’s lives. He helped me a lot through some tough times, and he was there for some of the happiest times of my life. I’ll miss him. Hell, I’ve been missing him since ‘99.

It’s weird how people you’ve never met can be of emotional consquence and respect. I’ve never met Ron and Fez but it was through this strange respect I was intrigued to view their friend’s blog. The straight-forward integrity and honesty which I found here are all I know of Bob, but I believe are rare and genuine. I’m sorry to have never heard him, God bless.

It’s rough knowing that an unforgetable personality like Bob is “dead,” but quotes are always going to be around that word when describing Bob, since his legacy is everlasting.
Thank you, Mary, for giving us a glimpse of the last days of Bob’s life. That couldn’t have been easy, and we appreciate it wholeheartedly.
Bob may have felt uneasy with the way his life ended, but I think he showed the greatest dignity by sharing with the world his final thoughts, communicating with you, Mary, his undying love, and making peace with people in his life he may have been short with.
There is a Tao saying:
The journey is the reward.
Thanks, Bob
The 17th of October, 2006 at 2:24 pm
Bob would be pleased to know that I never “loved” him. He might be more satisfied to know that I and a legion of others was profoundly influenced by and even, at times, overwhelmed by his style of acerbic and sarcastic wit. I suspect this list of comments will grow exponentially when the numbness engendered by the item by Eric Deggans in the SPTimes settles down to a manageable ache. It is incredibly hard to keep from lapsing into a self serving, lachrimal eulogy. That is just what Bob would find the most unacceptable. I finish with a simple THANK YOU for showing us how it it ends.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 2:24 pm
I listened to Bob every day until he was replaced at WFLA in 1999. He was magnetic. I loved his off-the-charts intelligence and how he refused to be politically correct. Plus, he had the greatest sardonic commentary. My friends and I were so angry when he left WFLA. I love talk radio, but no one I listen to captivates me the way he did. Every one of his shows was like a special event–not to be missed. He was radio personified.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 2:28 pm
I am grateful to have been able to listen to Bob for all those years. An incredibly “human” human being.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 2:40 pm
WOW, I heard about this today and the sadness that I feel I have not felt in a long time. All day long I have thought, what is this sadness? It is a feeling that I have only felt for family. As tears well up in my eyes I realize that after all these years Bob was a Uncle that I never personally knew. But I listened every day and that uncle shaped my life in so many ways. Bob was radio. He made me think every day about “life”. I will miss you Maddog. With Love, Fred

While Bob was on the radio, he taught us so much about life. His blog carried that same teaching forward, even unto the valley of the shadow.
Rest in Peace Bob. We will never forget you.
Mary, all my thoughts and best wishes are with you. Thank you so much for sharing your best friend with all of us. Take care of you.

When I moved from Massachusetts to Florida I knew no one. They let me listen to AM radio at work and thats when I met Bob. He became one of the closest friends I ever had and though he would have likely despised me for saying this: I learned a lot from him, especially about what it is to be a man…to think about things, to see through the crap some people lay on you. I learned a lot about religion, politics and life from Bob. Bob: thankyou for being my friend.
Rest in peace Bob. Thank you ever so much for being here for what turned out to be far too short a time. I’ll never forget you and the thousands of hours I listened to you. You had a great gig, and it mean’t something.
Mary, I am so sorry for your loss. Bob really was a pretty good man.

We have listened to Bob forever, always entertained by his wit and wisdom. One of our favorites was the “Mr. Airstream” segment. We laughed until we cried. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Mary. Bob Lassiter was one-of-a-kind for sure.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 4:08 pm
I’ve been deflated and on the verge of tears ever since I read the announcement yesterday. I never even heard Bob until after he was retired, and now I feel like my guts have been kicked out.
I loved Bob as though he was a family member. And in a sense, he was.
Mary, I hope it helps you to see how beloved your husband was. I’ve been thinking about you all day and the deep grief I know you feel. We know how much he loved you. In fact, he wrote me an email a month ago to congratulate me, having read my blog and discovering I was getting married at the end October. He wished that my marriage would be as happy as yours was, asking me never to take for granted the bond and support a man gets from his wife.
Please, if you need anything from us, please ask. It seems farfetched but I know that all of us will do whatever we can.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 4:22 pm
Your words infuriated the dolts and inspired the thoughtful. There will never be another. Thank you, Bob. Be good.

I knew I was starting to show my age when I started listening to talk radio, and Bob Lassiter is who I was listening for. I could not wait until 3:00 would roll around to hear Bob’s show, Especially during the holidays. What a story teller, Bob’s voice was so comforting I felt like I knew him personally. My heartfelt condolences to Muffin he so dearly loved and to Sharon and Jeffy who worked alongside him those years I listened to his show.

Sad time for me. I compare talkshow hosts of today to Bob and they ‘ain’t’ no Bob. Hope you get to the other side before the song stops playing and may you rest in peace Mad Dog.
To Mary, may your heart heal quickly and thank you sharing yours & Bob’s life with us.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 4:45 pm
I lost track of Bob after he left WLS and then I heard Ron & Fez talking about him a few months ago and became an avid reader of his blog.
I’m both sad and relieved that he has passed. Saddened to see him go but relieved his suffering is over.
He was the only person I ever listened to that made me yell at my radio on a regular basis but I never missed his show.
Good-bye Mad Dog and best wishes for you Mary.

I first heard Bob while I was driving hours and hours for my job, I was bored and looking for something of interest on the radio…then I found Bob! I have not been the same since. I had never listened to talk radio before and have never heard anyone that could match Mad Dog. He was “word man”, that voice. those words, those stories. My favorite,as is probably most…Mr Airstream, I almost peed my pants the first time I heard it. Every day, I found myself talking( or yelling) to my radio.
Thank you for your time, Bob. Or should I say “Thank you for your Vanessa”
My deepest sympathy, Mary. We all feel your loss.

I once heard it said that dying is like waking from a dream. I don’t know if that is true but I always liked the idea. I am thankful and always appreciated that Bob Lassiter was in my dream.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 6:08 pm
Mary,
It seems that Bob’s only true satisfaction was with you but as Thomas Edison once said “Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure.”
Thank you for supporting Bob’s disatisfactions allowing
Bob to create many fond memories for the rest of us.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 6:08 pm
I only just heard the news and it still seems unreal. My thoughts are still random and everywhere about Bob Lassiter.
As a teen I would listen to him on WFLA, his voice so solid and smooth even when he was verbally taking the wind out of someones sails (deservedly so). He’s the reason that 17 years later I still listen to talk radio. At one point I was lucky enough to hear him read ‘A Cup Of Christmas Tea’ at a bookstore. Afterwards he and his lovely wife were kind enough to spare 5 minutes with an awe-struck kid who worked at a zoo.
So many memories–Tastycakes, WPLP, WFLA, WSUN, his work with Sharon and Jeffy, the pledge/Lord’s prayer, his words about Dick Norman’s passing. And personal, like my ‘Bob Lassiter Is God’ shirt. And when at 18 I went rambling on air about wanting to be a communist, anarchist, and going to seminary and him pleading for someone to call the men in the white coats (I didn’t tell him that was me when we met 7 years later).
And Mary–thank you, God bless you for being his rock and his constant. And thank you for sharing your lives with us who care about you both. He was as lucky to have you as we were to have him in our lives.
I don’t want this to be true. I always thought that the worst day was when Bob left the airwaves for good–now that’s the second worst.
Thank you, Bob. Thank you–be good.
-Nafa.

I just found out Bob had passed away, I did not know he had been ill. I grew up in St. Pete and listened to WPLP 1985-1987….boy did Bob really piss off the conservative retiree’s, I was just a young man then, but Bob really struck a cord with me. I now live in Denver, and Jay Marvin is on out here for talk radio…..Take Care Bob and Rest in Peace.

I just yesterday watched a video I shot of the WFLA crew when they were at Tyrone Square Mall way back when. There was Bob as he was introduced by Neil…humble and quiet. Sorry to hear about the ‘last broadcast’ of Bob.

You will be missed.
Bastards indeed, people are generally cowards and make decisions based in fear. Listened to you before WLS and afterward. Your rich baritone filled my car speakers for years. I remember when you got pissed at callers asking “how are you?” at the beginining of the call and you started to play a recording of your response.
“I am fine, my dog is fine, my wife is fine. . etc
and one last thing, idiosynchratic as it is. I like the way you shortened the locations of callers and stoppped using their names.
“Palmetto you’re on the air,” “go ahead, Palm”
Thanks for having the courage to call out the weak-kneed losers that staff most of mainstream media.

Bob was good at what he did. He could talk about the wrapper on a posicle and I could listen. Glib, well spoken- interesting .
Besides the Holiday Shows, what I remember most is the feud with Miami. Tampa vs Miami.
Rick and Suds, Neil Rogers, the whole gang.
I still don’t know if it was a put-on or not, but when someone pranked Lassiter telling him “Neil Rogers is dead, I hope you’re happy !” Lassiter was beside himself with emotion.
Hey it was a joke and it was compelling radio and it was hilarious.
I found the link to this blog on the Neil Rogers site along with a photo of The Mad Dog.
So to all of you and especially Lassiter; thanks for the memories…
God Bless You Bob

When I herd the news about Bob’s passing I was shocked. And as I start to write there are no words to describe what I feel. It’s the same as when Dale passed. I’m still a Nascar fan and I will always be a fan of bob”s. I started listen in 1986 he had so much fun with the old people, the next thing I remember was rip the bimbo day, I had never herd anything like it. The time he got caught smoking. TV with Rush, move to WLS, triumphant return on 620 the back to 970, bunny-bear, Christmas shows, stories about trading against the boys in the pit, the upstairs washer, bankruptcy, and so much much more. He was a larger than life man the likes of witch I, no we will never see again. I can truly say that the way I thing today is because of BOB
Mary sweet Mary Bob was what he was because of your Love I pray you find comfort in that.

The 17th of October, 2006 at 7:32 pm
I cannot tell you what Bob meant to me. I first heard him on WFSO reading the paper because he was getting no calls. He was’nt reading the paper out loud, but to himself . All you heard on the air was the pages turning and some gutteral responses by Bob.It was one of the best things I ever heard and I shall never forget it. For a year on WFLA I had the honor of following Bob on the air with my own little talk show. One night on my way to work I heard him compliment my potential as a talk show host and I nearly ran of the road.I always respected the fact that he was a shy gentle man and never tried to engage him in mindless chat after his show, but sometimes he would talk at length to me before I went on the air and I shall always treasure those moments. That there was no place for Bob in radio any more is one of the many things wrong in this fallen world.
May you find the peace that alluded you on this planet.
love and warm thoughts…

I’m sorry, very very sorry, Mrs. Lassiter, for your loss. What a rare and wonderful person you truly must be. The women I have known would simply have abandoned me to the gutter were I to be in such a state as Bob was.
He was a great man, and tremendously underappreciated by the industry.
It is sad to us, the fans. But it is a far greater loss to you. I hope that you will be able to find comfort in the fact that you both had true love for each other. That is also very rare.
Please, take care.

Mary, the love you and Bob had for each other, as evidenced in his writings and yours, is an inspiration to me. You two are lucky to have had it. I wish you the best of everything always.

His words are immortal, whether living in the memories of those he touched, or tucked away in so many archives. A thousand years from now some one will stumble on to the works that Bob Lassiter left behind. With the same astonishment he invokes today, that person will sit astounded by the Mad Dog.
I was sad yesterday, I am sad today, and I will be sad tomorrow.
To you, Mary, his most beloved, I offer heart-felt condolences.

The 17th of October, 2006 at 9:54 pm
Impossible to agree with 100% of the time regardless of your political leanings…by design…Lassiter artfully employed bombast as one weapon in an arsenal that included humor, sarcasm, pathos and every once in a great while, when he felt like it, genuine warmth. Either brutally honest or just plain brutal (depending on which side of the day’s argument you found yourself on), Lassiter was equal parts amused by and frustrated with the foibles that mankind inflicted upon itself. He was also one of the last practitioners of radio as “theatre of the mind”. I could say he will be missed but anybody who owns a radio already does…whether they know it or not.
The 17th of October, 2006 at 10:09 pm
My new gig back in 1994 took me 49 miles from home each and every day. Five days a week, 98 miles per day. I hated that goddamned job. I remember all too well how the “to” commute in the pre-dawn blackness had been like driving to hell — maybe even worse, for I suppose hell is a one-way trip. It’s a bitch when you hate your job, and you’re the breadwinner — responsible for others, not just yourself. It became a lonliness like none I’d ever know up to that point. And though I’m not Catholic, I found a radio station that repeated the “Hail Mary full of grace…” I don’t know how many times. And as my heart pounded away the morning miles, the Hail Mary’s somehow helped. I never told anyone about that, nor written about it until now. My faith seemed also to be waning at that time, but that’s another story.
And so I’d sloth through my workday routine, marking time, and then it was time to leave. I often listened to 970 WFLA for the traffic reports, and that was when I first heard the Mad Dog. I remember well how this obviously intelligent radio host talked about watching birds; I don’t know why, but I thought that to be rather odd. I hate birds. Once in a while I hated Lassiter, but for the most part, he kept my attention. On and on through the stop lights and over the bay and all the way back home, day after day, weeks turning to months, and on and on again I listened to Mad Dog Lassiter. He made me laugh most of the time. He nearly made me cry a few times as well, once in particular: his Christmas reading. Speaking of his childhood, what his life was like. It was tender and tough … it was truth, and on that particular Christmas, I recall, it was the best Christmas gift, in many ways, for it shone a light on my own childhood, from an angle I hadn’t previously considered, I suppose. May sound rather corny or soft to a degree, but nevertheless, it’s truth. And that is my ode to the Mad Dog.
I called once, in response to a conversation about corporate greed, and various degrees of American disentigration. I called and simply said “Potter won.” This, I believe, in response to either his or another caller’s reference to the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” He knew what I meant about Potter winning.
Many times I wished to have had a much longer conversation with Mr. Lassiter. I often rolled would-be conversations around in my head. He and I, perhaps, kicking back with a few beers and eating scrapple (never heard of it before Lassiter; I love the stuff).
Rest in peace. You somehow helped me through perhaps the darkest, worst time of my life. I often thought that perhaps you looked a little too long or too often into the abyss, but I don’t know. Who ever can say?
The 17th of October, 2006 at 10:18 pm
Whenever I hear the traffic guy on 970 that does the promo about the glass company that will give you a box of steaks. I think of Bob and the time or times that Bob replied to Gary that he didn’t want a box of SNAKES !!! that was just one of many things he said that made me laugh. You were a great story teller and I enjoyed you riding with me all day.. what a great man you were. your words will be with me forever frog
The 17th of October, 2006 at 11:47 pm
Complicated..bombastic..shy..compelling..Bob was all of that..and more. Working with him at ‘PLP and ‘FLA exposed me to a lot of Bob. I’ll never forget the “drowning kittens” and “automated talk host shows”..and those that cut to the core of where we are..and where we’re heading. I’ll always remember when you, Mary, and Bob showed some interest
in each other in that small building at the end of the dirt road..the love for each other that evolved is awesome. You’ve demonstrated true love, Mary..Bob…sleep warm..and know that you are missed….
The 18th of October, 2006 at 5:29 am
When Bob started this blog, I don’t think he knew what he was getting into. The man that was called Mad Dog actually had so many people that loved and cared about him.
I don’t think that he ever really understood his audience, but Bob has become a part of all of our lives.
I look forward to listening to his Christmas special in a couple of months, as the family will sit down for dinner on Christmas Eve.
I have said this before and will say it again because I feel it is so fitting. In one of his many infamous religion episodes, Bob questioned why a caller would like to have life after death and the response was, “Because I would like to go on forever.”
Fittingly, Bob said, “Well, you are forever. Because, eveything you will ever say or do in this world lives FOREVER!”
I can’t think of a more appropriate statement to explain the legacy of the Magnificant Lassiter.
Good-bye, old friend…
The 18th of October, 2006 at 5:46 am
I sometimes speak in front of people and have learned that most people do not talk the way they write. The cadence in your mind is different than that coming out of your mouth. Bob was different as he was gifted in not only speaking but also putting his thoughts onto paper. I read his blog from 1300 miles away but in my mind I was driving on Ulmerton Road.
He created a tapestry of cut linen where the end of each thread was linked to our hearts and minds. Even after so many years the threads could still be pulled. I will miss the feel.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 7:27 am
I’m not a superstitious man, but on every Friday the 13th I look to see if anything actually bad happens. Nothing did to my knowledge until I heard about Bob’s passing.
One of my fondest radio memories was at the end of the SUN days. Ross Reebak inadvertantly/on purpose, gave Bob, Ron Benningtons’ cell phone number and Bob gave it out on the air, a major faux pas in the radio world. I’m sure that Bob thought it was a fake number….it wasn’t! I called and talked to Ronnie B, he was not amused.
You will be sorely missed and the world is a darker place with your passing, Bob. My condolances and my heart go out to you Mary, i hope you find peace in knowing that you were truely loved by the Mad Dog.
Frog.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 8:29 am
My dad and I listened to Bob religiously when he was at WLS. I loved how he would bate callers and they couldn’t see it. I remember what turned out to be his last day and he ended how he always did, by saying Frog. I always missed him since then and was sad to hear of his declining health, much too young to die. I’ve enjoyed listening to the clips on the airchecks site, they bring back many good memories. To Mary and all who were close to Bob, my deepest sympathies. For Bob, I hope he has finally found peace. FROG.

The first time I listened to Bob I was hooked on talk radio. I never missed one his shows. He was an amazing man smart, amusing and oh so right. I no longer listen to the drivel on talk radio. It is so shallow and and one-sided. We have lost a great talent and a mind that was too young to have been silenced. Mary, he loved you so much. He was a genius. Love from a chronic

Dear Mary,
I just today learned of Bob via my friend,Eric Deggans’, blog. While I was not familiar with him this story touches me deeply. I have a friend who has struggled for many years with a medical condition which takes more from him every year and reading Bob’s words hit very close to home for me as I have listened to my own friend admit to battling feelings of bitterness as he wonders how many losses he will have to endure, wondering why. I know the path you have both been on.
The heartbreak and overwhelm you are feeling are very real to me. Thank you and Bob for your poignant sharing. It’s a path we will all be on some day, if we haven’t been already. The words you both have shared are hard to read, because it is all so real. You bring us right to the most important places we will ever go.
Sending much love to you and yours.

I agree with everything you say, Bob.
R—I—G—H—T !
If you were a Tampa Bay area A.M.-Radio listener way back when, how could you ever forget him?
Rest in Peace, Lassiter.

Hopefully, he got right with God before the end. Otherwise, he had alot to answer for.

As I begin to realize my own mortality and ask “where have all the years gone?”, it becomes ever more evident that we are all on this earth for a very short time. We come in contact with people either by chance or by fate, and are touched in some way by all who we meet.
I feel privileged to have known and worked with Bob. He amazed me with his insights and knowledge, and surprized me by his “off the air” humbleness. He entertained, enlightened, enraged some… but most of all, he gave people from all walks of life something to look forward to everyday.
I look forward to meeting up with you again down the road, Mad-dog.
Peace by with you, my friend.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 4:03 pm
Please accept my condolences,Mary. People like Bob was, you just dont meet at every corner. There will never be another Mad Dog in Tampa Bay. Used to listen to him when I lived in St.Petersburg. I lite a candle for him in our local cemetery, its a custom in Slovakia.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 4:47 pm
I never heard Bob, and that definitely sounds like my loss. But anyone who was that much of a positive influence on Ron/Fez, enough to get Fezzie all choked up with emotion, has to be a good, genuine guy. I’m glad his pain is over and he’s in a better place.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 5:53 pm
Dear Mary,
Thank you for sharing Bob with us, even during your sadness. I began listening to him in the late 1980’s and followed his career like many others in this comment section. I appreciated his ability to ask the question - make me think - what a gift he was given. And I am so glad he had the opportunity to share it for so many years.
All my best to you at this difficult time.

accept my condolences,i came to know bob thru his cheese website. a candle that lit many candles. thanks bob.

Chicago could not understand the articulate voice and Bob’s challenge to think. I both craved the intelectual stimulation and the rage at some of his thoughts. He truly overcame so much in his life and that gave me hope. I live life on my terms and don’t apologize for it.
I don’t “get” midwesterner’s, I’m not one, but I did Bob.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 8:55 pm
In sympathy and with deep condolences to the passing of one of the greatest minds of our time. May you broadcast long and strong from the great beyond. Finally at rest and in peace.

One more bastard’s dead.
Good riddance, Bob. Enjoy flesh rot.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 9:15 pm
Lassiter always had this uncanny ability to reappear - to make his comeback - just when you thought that he was gone for good. Many of us remember him leaving WPLP, leaving WFLA for Chicago, coming back from Davenport to WSUN, coming back “home” to WFLA after leaving WSUN. Even with his blog, he came back a time or two after posting his final entries. So it has been incredibly difficult to come to grips with the finality of Lassiter’s passing. This year’s listening of the Christmas show will have added meaning. I doubt that I will get past “A Cup of Christmas Tea” without shedding a tear…..My deepest sympathies to Mary….
The 18th of October, 2006 at 9:18 pm
Thank you Bob, my condolences Mary.
The 18th of October, 2006 at 9:33 pm
My condolences Mary. I just found out this evening when I stopped by to check Bobs blog. I spent many a day listening to Bobs stories, his rants and raves. We out here have lost a voice from the radio that moved us in different ways. You have lost the man, your husband, your friend. Simple words can never say enough. Be strong. I don’t think Bob would expect anything less. Take care of yourself.
frog Mad Dog.

I first heard Bob on the radio as a 17 year old, listening to WLS. I made deliveries in the afternoon after school, and would listen to him start his show at 3 after Rush (and 4 when Rush got his extra hour). Back then, talk radio was still “a medium”, rather than the wingnuts’ self proclaimed God-given right.
I never heard anything like him before or since. I endured hours of Rush Limbaugh just to get to his show. I sent for his secret code list (member of the “talking snake crowd” was my favorite). He was enthralling. He was intelligent. He was articulate. He was powerful. He was (and remains) talk radio at its best.
When WLS removed Bob, that was the last time I had any serious interest in listening to anybody on the air give an opinion.
In 1999, I was so happy to get into a job that got me onto the internet and access to WFLA so I could hear Bob again, only to lose him again when his inimitable style got the hackles up of the Corporate Suits who sent him packing.
Then, I found this blog about 3 months ago. Again, I had the brief pleasure of Bob’s musings, still articulate through the agony. Still fighting. Still wanting something better, for all of us.
But now the light has gone out. I take this loss differently at age 34 than I would when I was half my age, first hearing Bob, but with no less regret. Bob helped me to think about things from a different angle–not just to “think for myself”, or to “not believe anything the government tells me”, etc., but to approach issues in a way that made me examine my very soul, my belief system, and what it meant to decide how something or someone should be valued. I haven’t had a mentor or teacher like that since then. And I sure miss him now.
For Mary: You have my thanks and admiration, my sympathy and respect, my condolence and my heartfelt appreciation. Bob saw so much that was wrong with this world that could be made right…but the one thing that gave him hope of a better life was the fact that he had you.
For Bob, whereever you are: Thank you for helping me to learn how to grow up and take responsibility. I will never forget you.

Mary,
After growing up in Tampa and listening to Bob, I’m now in NY training and teaching professional actors. I had some of my students recently listen to some of Bob’s work. (I just love that professional actors in NYC are hearing Bob Lassiter, how odd and great is that?!?!)
They were astonished at how clear it was to them that Bob has influenced my outlook on life. And I was astonished to hear how clear that was to them! And so I was again struck by the impact he made on me growing up. And, by extension, his work in Tampa now influences the training of professional actors — his skepticism, questioning things, passion, willingness to engage in conflict, emotional honesty, etc. What a world.
One day he let me come and sit with him in the studio while he did his show. That is a day I wll never forget. I was 15 and that was the hardest period of my life. Bob’s work helped me get through a tough adolescence — and now I’m in NY realizing my dreams. I am certain my life would have taken a very different form without Bob’s “teachings” to me as I grew up — and I think it would be a form far less pretty than the life I’m now lucky to be leading.
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to share with you during this time.
Respectfully, Jason Bennett in NYC

Bob once told me. “You’re soo much better on TV than you were on Radio.”
I was like, thanks, I think. Does that mean I really suck on radio?
HE WAS A LEGEND!
Mary, my prayers are with you.

I believe the best thing the Mad Dog brought to the table was his balls to stand up to the fallacies of christianity. He was a man not afraid to die with his convictions. Bob, you’re a man among men. See you in the next life,
Martin
The 19th of October, 2006 at 4:56 am
Bless you Mary for letting us know that Bob has left this world - my tears are flowing also as I did love the man - may peace be with you at this time. There will be no more like Bob Lassiter. He was one of a kind. Love, Jean
The 19th of October, 2006 at 5:10 am
Bob, was and is a one of a kind. I loved the man, he was a rare breed. I know he was complete, because of Mary. With out the true love of great woman, nobody could every be truly happy. I miss my Bobby, thank you Mary for sharing him with us.
With my deepest sympathy, Paul Flagg

This is one of the times I hope there is a heaven.Thank-you Bob Lassiter and peace be with you Mary.
The 19th of October, 2006 at 8:06 am
Lassiter “practiced what he preached” right up to the bitter end. What can you say? Really, what can you say?
What an amazing, geniune person.
We will not see his likes for a long, long, long time. If ever again.
Mary, I hope you find peace in the coming days…Bob is gone, but his love for you is obviously eternal, and I know that eternal love is what will be with you, in time, not the pain you are feeling now.
And now, it is up to us, Bob’s “children” to follow the good example he left for us.
C’mon, everyone. Make Daddy proud.

The 19th of October, 2006 at 9:57 am
I was turned on to Bob Lassister’s work through WMFU a few years ago and have been a fan ever since. He was a unique talent and I’m grateful to have access to mp3 archives of his shows to enjoy for years to come.
As the tralfamadorians say, “so it goes.”
See ya Bob. And Fuck’em if they can’t take a joke (although Lazlo Toth seems a kind of joke no one would wish to take).

RIP Mad Dog. You will be missed
The 19th of October, 2006 at 10:50 am
Re: Lazlo’s comment:
Bob would have loved it, and would have taken great pleasure in pointing out to Mr. Toth that he would NOT be experiencing flesh rot, as he was “friggin’ cremated, so GET OFF MY BLOG, YOU SUBHUMAN PIG!!!! Eleven forty-eight the time, next blogger, this is blog with Bob…”

Fare thee well, Bobby…
Fare thee well.
And thanks for allowing us along for the ride.
I don’t listen to talk radio anymore since it
was turned into the spew that it is today,
but I remember listening to the greatest
ever in the business. And will never forget
it. Someday maybe there will be another
like him, but it will be hard to get out from
under Bob’s shadow. A Giant’s shadow
often falls a great distance…
Peace down the road, Mary…

I have nothing profound to add as, like most, I am at a loss. Perhaps, someday, radio will return to what it was when Bob ruled the airwaves. Until then, we have outstanding memories and his “airchecks” to keep us smiling and hoping…. Say hello to Dave Fowler for us, Bob…wherever you guys are now. Mary, you are the definition of what a spouse/best friend/soul mate is supposed to be. Bob was rich beyond his wildest dreams in ways other than money. I wish you joy, love and peace.

The 19th of October, 2006 at 1:24 pm
I knew Bob Lassiter. I owe him more than I care to admit.
I didn’t have the courage to bid him farewell. My own father suffered from diabetes, had a stroke and spent the last four and a half years of his life as an invalid. I saw all the colors ones bodily humors can turn under those circumstances and seeing Bob’s blog reminded me of all that misery. I couldn’t screw up the guts to call Mary and set up a time to say goodbye, or hello. One last time the Mad Dog held up the mirror to humanity and its pretensions. Only this time I saw myself and couldn’t stand it.
I don’t even have the self-respect to sign my real name.
Such despair fills my heart. I can’t mutter any platitudes
about going to a better place, imagine a cartoonish view of St. Peter telling Lassiter he’s booked for the “Celestial Battle of the Talk Show Hosts” with Dick Norman, David Fowler and Tim Coles. Bob’s values and unrelenting clarity won’t permit that.
I can only take comfort in knowing that thanks to the internet, Lassiter’s work will be known and studied like great film or literature. In the far future, after we are all long dead, his name will be known wherever English is spoken and there are ears to hear. The Shakespeare of talk radio.
My condolences to Mary and to all who feel the pain of this loss.
The 19th of October, 2006 at 2:14 pm
My condolences, Mary, on your loss.
The 19th of October, 2006 at 4:22 pm
Thank you so much Marry for sharing Bobs last written words. I keep thinking about that stairway lift about how much Bob expressed his love for you about the emptiness you must feel when total strangers mourn his passing like a beloved friend. My thoughts are with you I will always wonder about the woman Bob loved so much it is inspiring.
Recently I hesitantly listened to one of Bobs shows uncertain how it would affect me and found myself transported back into time. Bob is attached to the events in our lives a part of our personal history when we were listening to him. It doesn’t hurt me to listen to Bob’s radio shows it hurts me to think about him being gone to see that last entry on his blog.
Bob made us a part of his life becoming a part ours he will be with me until I die always a part of my life.

What can I say Mary. My deepest sympathy and thanks for allowing us to leave our thoughts here.
I first started listening to Bob when he was on WPLP. I followed him more or less faithfully here in the Tampa Bay area in all the stops he made around the dial.
He was a rarity in his time, an intellectual on talk radio—something that has nearly passed beyond the pale in society today. He also said what he felt. He was able to justify it using logic and reason. Something that was also rare in his time and almost unheard of today.
Since Bob’s passing from the airwaves I have stopped listening to talk radio in this market. It’s no longer appealing; it’s no longer intellectually stimulating. It’s the same old song, ad infinitum, ad absurdum, ad nauseum. Radio has been dumbed down to the point where there is little point anymore.
I think (perhaps against his wishes) that, he will be remembered for a long time in this market. His air-checks are available in the Internet if anyone cares to listen. Someday perhaps, a young—idealistic proto- broadcaster will hear them and say to his or herself “that man was a GOD on the radio! I want to be just like him!â€
And so, the cycle repeats itself, ad infinitum.

Mary,
When Bob’s voice first hit the air on WPLP, I was already a seasoned talk-radio junkie… courtesy of my late mom, who had hooked me on the talk-format when I was just eight or nine years old.
So even though I was only about 24 when Bob landed the gig at PLP… I KNEW a good host when I heard one. And Bob was the best, hands down. No one, and I mean no one, in the 35-odd years I’ve been listening, has even come CLOSE to drawing me in like Bob did.
I had the pleasure of talking to him a number of times over the years, but unfortunately never had the pleasure of meeting him…. though ONCE, I came THAT CLOSE, and I’ve been kicking myself ever since. (It was a few years back at what was then Sarasota Camera Exchange, and Bob had stopped in at one of their Telescope ‘garage sales.’ Their telescope guy, Chuck, knew I loved Bob, and told me when I walked in that I had JUST missed him!)
My sincerest condolences to you Mary. I hope you derive some comfort from reading just how much Bob was loved and is now missed by those that knew him… whether in person, or via the radio.

Bob was a person who shared everything and then nothing about himself. I certainly hope that somehow God will show him how much joy and entertainment he gave to others who listened to his shows. My sincerest condolences to you Mary. Bob made people laugh and he made people think. Those were his gifts, and I can say for myself I learned a lot about life through is eyes and sometimes through his attitudes. There will never be another Maddog Lassiter!! Thank you also for giving the fans this blog. I know many appreciate reading Bob’s writings. I will keep you in my prayers!! Susie

I had never heard of Bob Lassiter until I read his obituary linked on MetaFilter. I followed the links, started listening and got hooked.
I’ve written up my thoughts on in Thank You, Bob, and Goodnight.
The upshot is that Bob Lassiter was an anachronism. Being an anachronism isn’t neccessarily a bad thing, as often the times change for the worse. Not only was the man an intelligent, fearless autodidact, but the sort of local voice no longer found in the media these days. That’s our loss.
I’m still listening to his airchecks compiled by his fans. A mark of greatness is when someone can add to his fan base even when he is gone. You can count me in. Now, like Bill Hicks, another talent taken from us too soon, when something happens I will think to myself “I wonder what Lassiter would say about this”.
My sincere condolences to Mary and Bob’s many fans.
From what I can gather, the man confronted his death with the same courage and aplomb that he showed in his life. Long after people have forgot about bloviating morons like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and the other interchangeable voices of the Clear Channel monopoly, people will, no doubt, still be listening to Bob Lassiter.
That’s what being a legend is.
The 20th of October, 2006 at 6:24 pm
I was glad to see that Bob was at least talking about religion toward the end. That told me, at the very least, it was in fact on his mind. Bob even said here that he was considering things he’d not considered before….during this tough time.
First and foremost, thank God he had you Mary. Your strength, courage & love you each had for eachother came through in all his writings…. That man adored you Mary.
I remember Bob often saying that once he hit the cart with “Take it to the Limit” to close his show….his ride home would be finished before the song ended.
How prophetic those words are now…..now that he is home with the Lord.
The kid from Collingswood did alright for himself…..

It seems fitting to include here some of the characters Bob so masterfully included in his broadcasts. Scattered throughout this most touching eulogy, faithful listeners can hear the magic even through tears of sorrow.
I enjoyed listening to Mad Dog many an hour–my favorites were his evening broadcasts early on. Not since have I heard anyone do radio as well as Lassiter. All the characters he enticed to call and those more gullible he reeled in were part of radio magic–true works of art.
Often, I was taken by Bob’s uncanny ability to present current affairs in a most thoughtful and balanced way. His powers of observation were the best. He saw the most poignant associations through the wordy haze of the day’s news. Who could tell a story better, I have not heard that person yet.
It is funny, as easy as he was to connect with as a listener; he seemed equally hard to approach. I never called. Part of me was chicken, the other saw the folly of engaging Lassiter in repartee. In his element and on his turf, a visitor stood little chance of leaving with his dignity intact. A few “professional†callers inserted great shtick, mostly though; it was the gullible soles hooked by masterful persuasion, which made the magic. There in lies the element of entertainment never taken for granted by Mr. Lassiter.
Bob was a great teacher. His blog is a testament to that fact. Death, particularly of someone familiar, is such an enigma. Yet, to the end, Lassiter described so clearly one man’s journey. As he did so many times on the radio, he taught those willing to hear some valuable lessons. It still feels weird that he is gone.

Bob moved me.
I wrote that crazy little ditty he kicked off his “Saturday Night Special†shows on WLS with… just because.
Bob still has a special place in my heart, and will continue to have a special place on my portable media player.

Probably Bob’s (and maybe talk radio’s) best call, without a doubt, was the old man who threatened to called the police.
Undoubtedly, the best call ever on radio…

Even in Bob’s current state, he still has the attention of the whackos out there and can still get them to check in on cue. Something tells me he’d be getting a chuckle out of it.
Mad Dog lives on in our hearts and minds.
Atta boy, Bob.

Under the hands of a judicious editor, with some interspersed commentary from someone who knew him well, or even best, this blog would make an exceptional book.
As for Lassiter, let it be said that he went out doing what none of his critics or any of the right-wing sanctimonious pontificators would ever have the courage to do; he let us in for his personal thoughts as he walked life’s final steps.
Game. Set. Match.
The 22nd of October, 2006 at 8:30 am
Bob’s thoughts in last year, just as over the years were stimulating and thought provoking as always…always. But his Muffin thoughts were profoundly inspirational. Bob would probably reject the idea of binding and publishing the year of the “Last Blog” but ultimately whether he believed in where he might now be….my guess is he would ultimately be heartened that his thoughts may go on…….maybe the show won’t end.
He was blessed to have you, Muffin.

Dear Mary,
I met you a few years ago at a WSUN funtion, and really enjoyed meeting you. I’m sure you wouldn’t remember it, but it was meaningful to me, to meet you and Bob. After reading this blog for almost a year now, the most impressive thing I got, was your love for Bob, and his for you. Many people just live with their spouses, but you two had something very, very special. I take a lesson away from this, and that is to love, honor and cherish my wife the way you two did for each other.
Mary, I wish the best for you, and offer my condolences as well. His life with you is a benefit to many of us, as to how to be in a relationship. Or, at least, strive to be.
Peace, Gary K

My eyes are so tear-filled and my hands shaky. I haven’t been to this site since his last entry. I was always afraid to check back thinking I’d see that same post. But something told me to check today. Part of me wanted to see something new and fresh. Something told me not to expect that. I listened to him from the time I was 22 until my mid 30s. He took me through a boyfriend, a husband, three kids, a bad marriage, a divorce.
And I’ve been listening to his air checks since finding his blog in August. But I’ve been saving his Christmas stories until this Christmas time. It will be bittersweet listening to him. It will be something I do in the middle of the night, when the fiance has gone to bed and it’s just me and my laptop because no doubt I will sob heavily and my fiance will just not understand. Bob was like family and I just found out a member of my family has passed on and when I hear his voice in Dec.,…..it will be painful but I’ll need to do it to honor his memory and give me some resolution.
I wish I had tapes of my own parents. I’ve long since forgotten the sound of their voice. But at least I’ll have Bob’s and no one will take that away from me.
My heartfelt condolences, to you Mary. My God he loved you!!!!
Michele LeBeaumont.

So, all of the mysteries are being unveiled. I always wondered who put together the WLS ditty.
A lot of people seem to have come across Bob at a turning point in their life — or at least, were able to make it far enough into the sunlight to mark a dark period as a “turning point”. So it was with me. I only “knew” him on WLS. It was during the first Gulf War, and taking the position that he did was not only unpopular — it was even brave. That’s what was marvelous, in retrospect: Bob might exaggerate to draw a deeper distinction, but I don’t think he would have ever been phony. It strikes me as terribly appropriate that his last published words are yet another excoriation of the phoniness that has come to dominate the world around us.
From listening again to his airchecks, and remembering the old shows I was too young and stupid not to record, I don’t know if Bob ever understood the effect he had. It’s strange to have people love or hate you without even knowing what you look like, what color your hair is, how you hold a cigarette or how you take your coffee — especially when you’re a private person. At least for me, it was the thought that Bob wasn’t phony. He had a job to do, yes, and he was good at it, but it was that personality that made us feel that in that big deep voice, we had a friend.

I will miss this man who taught me TO LISTEN!!…..before I heard Bob…..I just heard “noise” from most people……after learning from him………I realized it takes a lot to really hear what a person is saying…We are all flawed…….and even when we try our best……we can only do our best to share information with others………GO PEACEFULLY BOB!!

Mary, To you I wish peace and happy memories. I am truly saddened by all of this. In some strange way I always related to the way Bob saw things. I was only 16 when I started listening. I am so much older now and wouldn’t go back if I had to. I will miss him… Be Good.
The 25th of October, 2006 at 2:23 pm
Mary,
I only know you through Lassiter’s sweet words he always used to describe you on the air. Lassiter was my mom’s favorite; she taped and replayed his shows. One time I even took her to meet him. The first time I heard him was when he was ranting and raving, I think as he was preparing to leave WPLP. I couldn’t believe the things he was saying to the management, and on the air! But both my mom and I eventually got him. We were faithful listeners and he was the best at what he did. I do think at times he should have used more wisdom in what he said but he did seem to take it to the limit.
As one who lost an awesome husband two years ago, I can tell you that one can take all that past good and move forward with one’s life. And only look back to smile and reflect on awesome times but truly embrace the now of life. I know this is what Bob would want and I feel you will do this, for him and for yourself.
Much love,
Lorraine

Bob-
Wow, I can’t believe your not with us anymore, I’m still in a state of disbelief.
All I can do is remember your stories and how you conducted yourself and how I learned from it, and how I use that and apply in my own life.
I remember your wonderful monologs that made me pause, think and then open my mind to the possibilites that are out there.
I also feel that you were betrayed by the people around you that you trusted, I never really understood how someone as smart as you could have been fooled.
I also remember the “cart wars” with Neil, and your fasination with Kelly Ring.
( but perhaps I should have left that one alone )
the monolog I remember the most was: the one about professional football , and how it is a debiliating sport.
Mary- Thanks for taking care of Bob, I know it wasn’t easy, it never is.
I just hope you can find peace of mind in knowing that Bob is in a better place.
Sincerely, Richard - A long time fan of Bob’s

I got a lump in my throat when I heard the news. In the short time I got to hear Bob I mostly agreed with him and sometimes strongly disagreed but always knew I was hearing the real deal. No sugar coating, no BS. Bob always seemed to speak the truth, even if it was to his own detriment. He will be missed.
This calls for a 21 squeek toy salute, and not the wimpy kind either.
The 27th of October, 2006 at 3:45 am
Mary - I am deeply saddened to learn this news … Bob was one of a kind - we all were so very fortunate to have heard/known him. Peace and love to you.

My deepest sympathies,
Bob touched me in a special way, as he did to many others .
I wish you the best

The 27th of October, 2006 at 11:06 am
Mary, thank you for being Bob’s calm in the storm of life.
Bob was a one of a kind.
So many of us use this space to show our selves, some in a good way, a few in a bad way. That was the magic of Bob. He attracted all types.
My stories about Bob are simple……
I was a listener who got into radio because of Bob. I would listen to him while working and on the way home. I couldn’t get enough. When WSUN gave me a chance to be a board-op over nights I took it.
I got to work from 2 am to 6 am replaying Bob’s show. I felt like I was playing the show just for myself. I would clean up the studio Bob worked out of (Which was more like a large broom closet) and would save the show notes Bob would throw away after his show.
The brightest part of this time, to me, was having Bob (as well as others on the station) spend times talking about “The late night Board OP” and a letter left by some girl for me (I still think one of the other Board Ops wrote it as a joke)
When Bob went to WFLA I followed and worked on the weekends that’s when I finally got to produce a live show for Bob. Bob was a quiet man, but always professional when doing the show.
I will always remember sitting at a table with Bob holding court, talking about life and the radio biz with a group of four of us listening and watching the “Great One”. As Bob took a sip from his Black Russian and would exclaim “These are not made for mortal men.”
Bob, you were never mortal in our eyes.
As another famous Bob would say…Thanks for the memories.
Deron
The 27th of October, 2006 at 6:43 pm
This just sucks that Bob is gone. I hope he was wrong and there is a heaven so when I die I can listen to Bob, Dick Norman, Fowlwer, Jean Sheperd and Brad Crandal and even King Coles (can you imagine!). It is amazing how people we dont know can influence our lives. I hope Mary reads these post (although not the rank ones) and she is doing ok.
P.S. I know as fans we don’t know the inner workings of that radio world but a note to Lionel; It sure seems from here if it were not for Bob you wouldn’t be where you are today!!
The 28th of October, 2006 at 1:21 am
Bob’s legacy is an incredible one. He is greatly missed. Thank you, Mary, for sharing his final thoughts with us.
The 29th of October, 2006 at 4:16 pm
Mary,
One of the highlights of my life was being one of Bob’s listeners at WPLP who got to fill in for him when the two of you got married. I was also the lucky guy who wound up with a box of his software that he gave away one night of WFLA.
Life is so precious and so short. Loss is so very hard.
God bless you and (like it or not Bob) God bless your husband.
You are in my thoughts.
The 29th of October, 2006 at 6:41 pm
What a man. Bob was my introduction to “talk radio”. I accidently stumbled upon him one day in the 80’s on WFLA. I followed him everywhere I could on the dial. While he was way to the left from me, his style and wisdom always made me rethink how I got to my own conclusions on the issues. My favorite subject for combat was the Bible. My favorite opponents were the “Bible Scholars”. If you went into the ring with the MAD DOG carrying a Bible you have better studied hard or you were in for pure humiliation. That man knew the Bible better than anyone I ever heard him debate. I think he secretly wanted to find someone that could convince him that the Bible was believable so he could make some sense of this crazy thing we call life. I always hoped to hear you again somewhere on the dial. Where ever you are now I hope they don’t make you give the weather report. I know how you hated it. May you rest in peace in the arms of the Lord. Love to Mary

The 29th of October, 2006 at 11:38 pm
Bob - you have shared something unique with us all, sometimes painful, sometimes funny, but clearly something real. I for one will never forget reading this blog. I hope we can all meet on the otherside.
Mary, we all think you are a very special person, and you will be in our prayers here. I am not sure why Bob kept his blog, but it really is nice that you made the last post and opened up comments. I was just checking back, just in case, and am glad to be able send a small positive thought to you in this trying time. God bless you both.
The 29th of October, 2006 at 11:42 pm
I hope that while he was still here, he had some idea of his lasting impact and of how much he was truly appreciated and loved. He will be remembered by many for a long long time.

Dear Muffin,
I was saddened to learn of Bob’s final chapter, and my thoughts go out to you at this time.
I came across your husband’s very witty and insightful writings during his Big-Cheese writing-period, of some two years ago.
He had a gripping way of writing and his powers of observation of human (mis)-behaviour was second to none.
I wonder if he realised the powers his writings had on many of us?

I heard “Take it to the Limit” earlier today on an easy listening station at work and immediately thought of Bob. As far as I’m concerned, the song belongs to him and always will. We miss you big man!

Whether we liked it or not..Bob influenced us all..He was the one who sat with me when I first began talk radio and told me how it should be done..Be unafraid..lay it all out for the listener or they will think you are phony..Do what you feel is right..Don’t listen to the topic lady…go with your heart..be it serious or silly..Thanks Bob….and for you Mary..I never met you personally but through Bob I feel as if I know you well and I must say..the one thing that came through loud and clear on the radio and in personal talks with Lassiter, was his heartfelt love and devotion to you..May your heart be comforted with the love Bob had for you…because that is what I admired most about Bob.
The 31st of October, 2006 at 2:05 pm
To all those people who tried to filth up this tribute, you never could get the best of Bob while he was alive…so you tried it after his death on this blog. You have been exposed now, as to your true character, and have still not gotten the best of the better man. My sympathy to you Mary,
Bob M.
The 31st of October, 2006 at 4:22 pm
To Bob,
Just sitting here thinking about you. Miss you a bunch. I hope you are pleasantly surprised by the great unknown.
To the dude on here who keeps using different names, and saying the filth. The pain you must be in with yourself. You are your own worst enemy. Seek some help my friend, cause you deserve it. Thank God, so many of us here don’t lead the pathetic life you do. I’d probably want to kill myself and just end it all. Well, happy halloween.
The 31st of October, 2006 at 8:04 pm
I knew of Bob during his Cheese days. His writing was always insightful with that tongue in cheek humor. I suspect there is plenty about Bob that we all share but he always had the cajoles to put it out there in black and white with that classic irreverent “no regrets” attitude. The world lost a good one this month. My deepest sympathy to the Muffin. We will all miss him.
The 31st of October, 2006 at 8:15 pm
Mary,
What do you think Bob would have hated more- people posting nasty comments on his blog or people praying for him with a relegion he did not believe in?
The 31st of October, 2006 at 8:27 pm
Even though I loved Bob,I always thought “Airstream guy” was a made up call. I believe Bob dreamed it up after the phenomenal success of Neil Rogers‘ “Bridgetender” call. I always assumed it was a phony call and was suprised to see so many people on this blog refer to it as their favorite call. Guess we will never know the truth now.
The 31st of October, 2006 at 8:31 pm
Hey Rushfan-your name says it all. Why not change it to Gullible Sap
The 31st of October, 2006 at 8:40 pm

In Requiem…
Bob’s media, talk radio, died about seven years ago after his last show ended.
The medium, as he predicted it would, has disintigrated into endless carbon-copy republican mouthpieces. There is neither distiction between such or any entertainment contained within them. It’s all pointless politics aimed at making the rich far richer, and the poor far poorer. And unfortunately, there are countless millions gullable enough to mindlessly follow along each day.
But, such fools did not know what to make of our dear Bob. Leaving only those of us who actually have some functioning grey-matter to truly appreciate the humorous, the sad, the longing, the brilliant, and ultimately lonely character of Bob Lassiter.
Again, peace to you Mary for your loss, and ours…
The 31st of October, 2006 at 9:37 pm
Bunny,
Go to Neil Rogers website. On the Lassiter memorial page they play the “Airstream guy” phone call and talk about it. They pretty much say it was a well known fact it was made up by Bob in response to “The Bridgetender”
The 1st of November, 2006 at 6:44 am
Bob had been part of my life since I was about 7 years old and heard the “Mr. Airstream” call live as it happened. He was the greatest talk radio host in the history of the medium and I have and always will miss him. My condolences to his wife.
The 1st of November, 2006 at 7:53 am
Gee wiz, it seems the truth just can’t be taken by some people. It’s too late for Lassiter now. Unless he got right with God before the end, he is in hell. It’s as simple as that. You better worry about your own souls people.
The 1st of November, 2006 at 8:32 am
I believe, if I’m not mistaken, that Mr. Airstream was Rocky and Bob didn’t know it at the time, Frog.
The 1st of November, 2006 at 8:37 am
Rush Fan
Please take this advice from a fellow Christian. Your own soul is in danger! Please open your heart!
Its not too late to change. Look in your heart and you’ll know what I say is Truth. Turn away from arrogance. Turn away from hate. Turn to Love. Turn to Truth. Turn to Jesus! Remember, only the Child-Like will know Heaven. This is Truth from Our Savior himself. Turn away from cleverness! Turn away from scornfulness! Pray for Bob Lassiter! Pray that he found the Truth! Pray for the people who have left messages on this blog! Pray that they may come to know the Truth! And treat them with kindness, as Our Savior treated the sinners he encountered with kindness! Be simple-minded and kind!
Bob Lassiter was a Doubting Thomas. I suspect many of the people who leave comments on this blog are Doubting Thomases. Thomas needed to touch the flesh of Our Savior to accept his ressurection. The challenge Doubting Thomases face is to accept the limits of reason, the limits of logic, the limits of intellect, the limits of cleverness. And embrace Faith and Our Lord.
I will pray for you Rush Fan. Do not become enamored with spitefulness and cleverness like Bob Lassiter. Smile, let God’s light shine through you. I will pray for Bob Lassiter. And I will pray for the people who have left a message on this blog. I will pray that someday we will all be with our Heavenly Father, together forever…
I love you all. But much more importantly, Jesus loves you all. Believe in him, and eternal life in Heaven is yours. Its that wonderfully simple! Remember the Good News! He is risen!
Yours in Christ…

It’s just like the show was! Some dumbasses talking shit, and the fans stepping in in Bob’s stead!
The show goes on! This remains the Bob Lassiter Show!!
You’ve accidentaly made the perfect tribute!
The 1st of November, 2006 at 10:55 am
The only one who would know that it is just one “dude” posting shit and leading a pathetic life would be the “dude” who is posting the shit and leading the pathetic life. Nice try dickweed. You’ve been busted!
The 1st of November, 2006 at 10:57 am
I would personally like to have Lazlos address or how I can reach him…..reach him with my hands around his neck.
You, sir, are a lowlife. To trample a dead mans grave, I know you will rot in hell and I gain a sense of fulfillment knowing that.
The 1st of November, 2006 at 6:58 pm
Rush Fan……you should change tour name to RushFanatic….people like you who feel the need to tell us all who is and who isnt going to heaven make me sick….you are an insignificant speck to me…..who knows what God thinks about you.
The 1st of November, 2006 at 8:42 pm
‘Touch the flesh of our savior?’ Jeez buddy, you seem like a nice guy and all but you think you might be taking it a tad too seriously? Touch the flesh of our savior? Jeez.
The 1st of November, 2006 at 8:48 pm
Guys,
People like rushfan will always be around-like bad weather. He either is posting this crap to get a rise out of people or even sadder, he really believes it. Either way don’t give him the power. Ignore him and he will crawl back under his rock.
The 1st of November, 2006 at 10:36 pm
Again, some people just can’t seem to handle the simplest truth.
Believe what you like jerks, it is YOUR souls that will perish. Not mine.
I make YOU sick, eh? I should be nicer about it, eh? Well, that’s just not the way things work kiddies. You make God sick by the way you behave.
But by all means, allow Satan to drag you down with Lassiter (for whom all the prayers in the world will not help now).
And nope, I really do not care what happens to you. However, as I warned Lassiter - on this very blog - before he died, so I now warn all of you as well. That is all God requires me to do.
With that, I wash my hands of you. When you are standing at the gates of hell, as Lassiter most likely did, you will remember my warning all too well.

It seems fitting to include here some of the characters Bob so masterfully included in his broadcasts. Scattered throughout this most touching eulogy, faithful listeners can hear the magic even through tears of sorrow.
As easy as he was to connect with as a listener; he seemed equally hard to approach. Since Mr. Lassiter limited the comments on his blog, I imagine he would not care for some of what is here. He seemed a complex man who wanted simply to be understood. He entertained me to no end.
It still feels weird that he is gone. What in the world is it like on the other side – nothing, I imagine.

Protect me from your followers…
The 2nd of November, 2006 at 5:58 pm
Rushfan
typical smug, self satisfied christian. God “required’ him to warn us. HA HA sure he did. And don’t think he’s gone. His ego is too big to not see if he got a reaction out of us. What did Bob call them? “The talking snake crowd”?
The 2nd of November, 2006 at 9:53 pm
Who cares about the jackoffs anyway. Bob would have had a field day with them as he often did in the early days. It just goes to show us what influence the man really had. Seven years off the air, now dead, and they still keep crawling out of the woodwork to “challenge” him. How nervous the stuffed suits in the big chairs must have been over him. Do Jack Harris, or Tedd Webb make people react this way? Lionel? Even Limbaugh can’t match this.
What a bunch of cowards and phonies radio has. He was too good for them.
The 3rd of November, 2006 at 6:21 am
It’s assholes like you that are engcouraging lowlifes like rushfan to come back here. Ignore the sonovabitch, don’t sit there and talk about how he’s not gone yet. I think you want more of that kind to post here just for your entertainment.
What a piece of shit you are!!
The 3rd of November, 2006 at 7:43 am
My special Lassiter moment is one of the greatest memories of my life so far. It was february 1998, and mad dog was pissy about george washingtons birthday. He kept complaining that george washington owned slaves and so his birthday should not be on the calender. Lots of people were pissed about him saying that. So I call him up, and when I get on the radio with him I get him to start up about george washington owning “human beings”. Its then that I got him good, and put one over on old mad dog. I told him that it was not humans but niggers that washington owned and that there is a big difference. He could not say anything to that! So he did what he always did when he lost a argument he hung up on me and then started talking bad about me. I really liked that I got the best of him that day and will always remember it happly.
The 3rd of November, 2006 at 7:52 am
Anyone interested in telling about their best phone call into Bob, or maybe a memory of their favorite caller? Might be good to move onto something a little more fun than what is currently going on, thanks to a few lowlifes. Miss you Bob…..Gary
I would like to request that we all ignore those posts that are very disrespectful to Mary, cause if we do respond to that, it will never stop.
The 3rd of November, 2006 at 9:26 am
TO: RushFan - So WE make God sick the way we live…? If there is God,its people like you, NOT US, who make Him sad /sick/. I have seen many brainwashed people in my life, most of them, sadly in the United States…How about the followers of Church of Scientology in your own backyard - Clearwater? And YES, in a way you are brainwashed too, just dont know it. Its better for you this way! Of course, you have all the right in the world to live the “right” way…

All of you losers need to get a “real life” and let this man rest in peace. Show some dignity and have some respect. Pretend to have some class, if that’s possible. Mary, please consider closing the comments section. Bob’s true fans have said their goodbyes. God Bless.
The 4th of November, 2006 at 10:49 am
I really enjoyed Bob, the radio personality, and I cannot pretend to know what he would or would not have wanted personally. I never knew him personally and by his own admission, few did. Sometimes it felt like I knew him, but he had admonished all of us to be cautious of that leap. He had said on more than one occasion that none of “us†knew him.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Bob asked Mary to leave the comments open – at least until the Web Site lease expires. As disturbing as some comments seem, they are what allowed Mr. and Mrs. Lassiter to enjoy financial wealth. They are what made them very wealthy. Without a market, all the talent in the world and a dollar might buy a cup of coffee. Mad Dog’s talent was the vehicle, and the extreme discourse from some of those we see here was the fuel. Lassiter traveled a long way on that fuel and (I assume) enjoyed the nice things his success afforded Mary and him. Perhaps (and I know I am being presumptuous) Bob left this as a tribute for those who afforded him the lifestyle he gave his one true love.
The 4th of November, 2006 at 8:45 pm
Dear Mary,
